We ship improvements and new features through TimeCapsule updates. Below are some of the things we’re building next.
Note: these features are planned and may evolve as we test and improve them.
🧩 Expand storage with external drives (USB)
Plug in an external HDD/SSD via USB to expand your TimeCapsule storage. This allows your TimeCapsule to grow with your family’s library over time.
🗄️ External drive backups (extra safety)
We plan to support using an external drive as an additional backup target. That means TimeCapsule can copy your media to an external drive so you still have your data even if the device hardware fails.
☁️ Encrypted cloud backup (optional)
We plan to offer optional backups to cloud providers (for example: Google Drive, OneDrive, and others). The goal is to keep your privacy strong by encrypting your library locally before uploading — so not even the cloud provider can view your photos.
You’ll be able to decrypt your backup using our tool on your computer when needed.
🔐 Per-user encrypted storage (opt-in)
Today, Immich stores user media on the TimeCapsule drive in a standard (unencrypted) format.
We plan to add an opt-in mode where each user’s library can be stored encrypted on disk. The idea: your library is encrypted with a password only you know (for example, the same password you use to log into Immich).
This means:
even the Admin can’t access your files on disk ✅
your files stay protected even if the drive is removed and read externally ✅
